Fish product auditing – Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)
The MSC is the world's leading certification and eco labelling program for sustainable seafood.
The MSC runs the program, working together with partners to transform the world's seafood markets and promote sustainable fishing practices. MSC's credible standards for sustainable fishing and seafood traceability seek to increase the availability of certified sustainable seafood and their distinctive blue eco label makes it easy for everyone to take part.
The MSC has developed standards for sustainable fishing and seafood traceability. Both standards are based on independent third-party assessments by accredited certifiers. They meet the world's toughest best practice criteria and are helping to transform global seafood markets.
MSC's Vision is of the world's oceans teeming with life, and seafood supplies safeguarded for this and future generations.
MSC's Mission is to use MSC's eco label and fishery certification program to contribute to the health of the world's oceans by recognizing and rewarding sustainable fishing practices, influencing the choices people make when buying seafood, and working with their partners to transform the seafood market to a sustainable basis.
The MSC Chain of Custody standard for seafood traceability ensures that the MSC label is only displayed on seafood from a MSC certified sustainable fishery. If a fishery is certified as meeting the MSC environmental standard for sustainable fishing, use of the MSC eco label on seafood products is permitted only where there has been independent verification that the product originated from a certified fishery. An independent certification against the Chain of Custody standard provides this verification.
